What is a Dental Bridge?

A bridge is made from two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap (these anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth) and a false tooth or teeth in between. These false teeth are called pontics and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials. Dental bridges are supported by natural teeth or implants.

Benefits of Bridges

  • Restore your smile
  • Restore the ability to properly chew and speak
  • Maintain the shape of your face
  • Distribute the forces in your bite properly by replacing missing teeth
  • Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position

Bridges FAQs

A dental bridge is an attachment consisting of two or more crowns used to replace missing teeth. It can be attached to the healthy teeth on both sides of the gap or to implants.
Dental bridges are permanent or fixed because dentists use a dental cement to bond them to the anchor teeth. Only dentists can remove them, if needed.
Even though dental bridges are considered permanent, they typically last between 5 and 15 years due to normal wear and tear and may require replacement.
While dental bridges have many advantages, they also have some disadvantages. For instance, if the anchor teeth aren't strong enough to hold the bridge, the teeth could fracture. Additionally, if proper dental hygiene isn't followed when cleaning the bridge, it could lead to future tooth decay issues.
Dental bridges vary in cost, depending on the type you choose and whether your insurance covers any part of the procedure. During your consultation, your dentist will discuss the cost of treatment with you before scheduling your appointment.
